SINT-LUKAS GALERIERUIMTE MOET BLIJVEN!

OPROEP AAN DE DIRECTIE VAN LUCA SCHOOL OF ARTS

Namens studenten, personeelsleden en docenten van LUCA Campus Brussel protesteren wij tegen de voorgenomen sluiting – al dan niet tijdelijk – van de Sint-Lukas Galerieruimte.

Vanaf september 2014 zal de galerieruimte aan de Paleizenstraat niet meer gebruikt kunnen worden waarvoor zij bedoeld is.

De directie van LUCA is van plan om deze ruimte, ondanks haar publieke karakter, een administratieve functie te geven. Men stelt weliswaar dat dit slechts tijdelijk is, vanwege de werken elders in het gebouw, maar wij vrezen dat de galerie nooit meer terug in gebruik zal worden genomen.

De Sint-Lukas Galerie is een onmisbaar verbindingselement tussen de school, de kunstwereld en de stedelijke gemeenschap, en draagt als zodanig bij aan de professionele oriëntatie van onze studenten. Bovendien fungeert de galerie als een podium waar met grote regelmaat presentaties, workshops, projecten en andere onderwijsactiviteiten plaatsvinden, die de culturele en sociale inbedding van het LUCA-onderwijs versterken.

Met de sluiting van de galerieruimte haalt de directie een streep door deze activiteiten, en ontneemt ze de campus een belangrijk "sociaal medium". De opleidingen verliezen een cruciaal onderwijsinstrument, en veelbelovende plannen voor tentoonstellingen en projecten kunnen nu niet worden uitgevoerd.

Wij roepen de directie van LUCA dringend op om met ons in dialoog te treden en de onzalige plannen ten aanzien van de galerieruimte te herzien.

CALLING THE MANAGEMENT OF LUCA SCHOOL OF ARTS

In the name of the students, staff and tutors of LUCA, Campus Brussels, we protest against the intended closing - even if temporary - of the Sint-Lukas Gallery Space.

From September 2014, our gallery, on the Paleizenstraat, shall not be in use for what it was originally intended.

Disregarding the public character of this space, the management of LUCA is planning on converting the gallery, giving it an administrative function.  Even though it is suggested that this is a temporary solution, due to construction work elsewhere in the building, we fear that the gallery will never return to its rightful usage.

The Sint-Lukas Gallery is an unmissable fusing element between the school, the art world, and the local community. It therefore allows for professional orientation of our students.

Above this, the gallery functions as a podium, upon which a great number of presentations, workshops, projects and other educational activities are regularly carried out. These gallery events embed and strengthen the LUCA education both socially and culturally.

With the closing of the gallery space, the management is drawing the line to these activities, and removing the campus of an important social medium. The courses will lose a crucial educational tool, and we will miss out on promising planned exhibitions and projects can now, no longer be carried out.

We call to the management of LUCA urgently, to engage with us in this dialogue and reassess the unfortunate plans for the gallery space.
