Petitie tegen de afschaffing van projectsubsidies in Antwerpen (English below)

Het Antwerpse stadsbestuur heeft beslist om de projectsubsidies voor de Antwerpse cultuursector te schrappen. De komende drie jaar wordt er ons jaarlijks 720 000 euro ontnomen. Dit zorgt voor nóg minder toekomstperspectief voor jonge kunstenaars, in een veld dat al heel competitief is. Waar moeten we aan beginnen na onze opleiding? Is er nog plaats voor ons werk?
Cultuursubsidies zijn essentieel om de toekomst van het kunstenlandschap te garanderen. Ze bieden de voedingsbodem waarop jonge kunstenaars kunnen groeien en experimenteren. En zonder experiment is er geen cultuur.
De nieuwe maatregel bedreigt niet enkel de toekomst van de kunststudenten, maar die van alle kunstenaars en cultuurwerkers die hun mogelijkheden ingeperkt zien door dit beleid. Vooral jongeren en zij die hun plek in de maatschappij nog moeten zoeken krijgen de zwaarste klap. We stevenen af op een kaal cultuurlandschap dat geen kansen meer kan bieden aan zij die het het meest nodig hebben.
Bij uitbreiding is deze beslissing ook een verlies voor de burger, een collectief gemis voor de maatschappij. Alle kunsten zijn vermaard over de hele wereld. Ook Antwerpen staat bekend als een stad van grote kunstenaars. Dat succes komt echter niet vanzelf: er is hard aan gewerkt om een netwerk op te stellen waarin onze kunst kan bloeien, en zonder vetrouwen en investeringen komt die bloeiende periode in gevaar. Het stadsbestuur wil dit netwerk onderuit halen en dat mogen we niet laten gebeuren. Waar drie jaar lang wordt bespaard, zou moeten worden geïnvesteerd.
Daarom eisen wij dat de beslissing, het afschaffen van de projectsubsidies voor de komende drie jaar, wordt teruggedraaid.
Deze petitie wordt gesteund door het koninklijk Conservatorium en wordt georganiseerd door de studenten.

The Antwerp city council has decided to cut project subsidies for the Antwerp cultural sector. For the next three years, we will be deprived of EUR 720 000 annually. This ensures even less future perspective for young artists, in a field that is already very competitive. Where should we start after our education?Is there still room for our work?
Cultural subsidies are essential to guarantee the future of the arts landscape. They provide the cradle in which young artists can grow and experiment. And without experiment there is no culture.
The new measure is not just about the future of art students, but also about so many other people and groups who see their opportunities curtailed by this policy. Especially young people and those who have yet to find their place in society are hit the hardest. We are heading for a barren cultural landscape that can no longer offer opportunities to those who need it most.
This decision is also a loss for all citizens, a collective loss to society. All arts are revered all over the world. Antwerp is also known as a city of great artists. However, that success does not come by itself: hard work has gone into creating a network in which our art can flourish, and without trust and investment that flourishing period is in danger. The city council wants to undermine this network and we can’t let that happen. Where savings are made for three years, investments should be made.
That is why we demand that the decision to abolish project subsidies for the next three years be reversed.
