Bericht omtrent het dreigende einde van Contour Biennale voor Bewegend Beeld
Na tien edities verdwijnt de internationaal gerenommeerde Contour Biennale voor Bewegend Beeld. Kunstenaars, filmmakers, curatoren, producenten en organisaties die actief zijn binnen de sector van de audiovisuele en beeldende kunsten trekken aan de alarmbel. Contour is de enige biënnale in Vlaanderen met een toonaangevende reputatie en een stevig netwerk in de internationale kunstwereld. Als vlaggenschip vervult ze een cruciale rol binnen de audiovisuele en beeldende kunsten.
Contour Biennale ontstond in 2003 als een kunstenfestival in Mechelen en trok al gauw bovenlokale en internationale bezoekers aan. De biënnale leverde een significante bijdrage aan het creëren én uitdragen van een draagvlak voor de audiovisuele kunsten bij een breder publiek. In 2017 besloten Contour en het Mechelse kunstencentrum nona om te fuseren. Als kleine, ambitieuze organisatie zocht Contour naar een structuur die de biënnale stabieler en slagkrachtiger kon maken. Het omgekeerde bleek echter waar: in de lente van 2023 besliste nona om de biënnale op te doeken. Als alternatief stelt nona nu een programma voor met een tweetal tentoonstellingen per jaar in Mechelen en een sterk afgeslankt budget. Nochtans kreeg nona een positief advies voor deze beleidsperiode, met de biënnale als een van de fundamentele pijlers van de werking van het kunstencentrum. Sterker nog: binnen het ingediende tienjarenplan blijkt Contour zelfs één van de kernargumenten van de commissie te zijn om de aanvraag van nona te valideren.
In de jaren na de fusie werd duidelijk dat nona weinig voeling heeft met de biënnale of de waarde ervan binnen de audiovisuele en beeldende kunsten. Er zat maar liefst vier jaar tussen de laatste en de voorlaatste editie, gedurende meerdere jaren werd geen coördinator aangesteld, en een lauwe inzet op publiekswerking, communicatie en promotie laat zich voelen in zowel de visibiliteit als in de bezoekcijfers van Contour. Nochtans zou de stijging van de werkingsmiddelen het kunstencentrum toelaten evenveel in haar Contour-pijler te investeren als in haar muziek- en theaterwerking.
De sector staat niet achter de beslissing om de Contour Biennale stop te zetten. Deze beslissing werd binnenskamers genomen door nona zonder enig overleg met het artistiek comité, dat al vijftien jaar als adviesraad fungeert voor Contour en in alle stilte ontbonden werd. Er gebeurde geen overleg met coproducenten, partners en andere spelers binnen het veld van de audiovisuele en beeldende kunsten. We betreuren het gebrek aan verantwoordelijkheid en zorg dat het kunstencentrum opneemt voor de biënnale. De sector wil actief meewerken aan oplossingen voor een doorstart van de biënnale.
Wij, de ondertekenaars betreuren het eenzijdig en onoverdacht opzeggen van de Contour Biennale en ijveren ervoor dat Contour als biënnale kan blijven bestaan binnen een nieuwe constellatie van actoren.
Message regarding the imminent end of Contour Biennial of Moving Images
After ten editions, the internationally renowned Contour Biennial of Moving Images is now slated to disappear. Artists, filmmakers, curators, producers and organisations active in the field of audiovisual and visual arts wish to sound the alarm bell. Contour is the only biennial in Flanders with a leading reputation and a solid anchoring in the international art world. It occupies a distinct position and plays a crucial role in the audiovisual and visual arts.
Contour Biennial started in 2003 as an arts festival in Mechelen and soon attracted both local and international visitors. The biennial made a significant contribution in creating and publicizing the much-needed support for the audiovisual arts among a wider audience. Contour and arts center nona (Mechelen) decided to merge in 2017. As a small but ambitious structure, Contour looked for an organisation that could bolster and strengthen the biennial. The opposite happened: spring 2023, nona decided to shut it down. As an alternative, nona offers to organise two exhibitions a year in Mechelen with a substantially reduced budget. And yet, nona received a positive feedback for the current funding period by including the biennial as one of the pivotal elements to their program. In fact, it was one of the commission’s core argument to validate their submitted ten-year plan.
In the years after the merger, it became clear that nona was out of touch with the biennial and its value within the audiovisual and visual arts. No less than four years passed between the last two editions, no coordinator was appointed for several years and the impact of lukewarm efforts invested in communication, promotion and general audience development became tangible in the poor visitor numbers and the lack of overall visibility of the biennial. And yet the increased operating resources should have allowed the organisation to invest as much in Contour as it does in its live arts program.
The sector does not support the decision to shut down the Contour Biennial. This decision was taken behind closed doors by nona, without consulting the artistic committee which has served as the advisory board for Contour for fifteen years and was quietly dissolved. Co-producers, partners, and other stakeholders of the audiovisual and visual arts were not consulted. We deplore the lack of responsibility and care shown by nona in all matters concerning the biennial. The sector wants to actively contribute to solutions for a continuation of the biennial.
We, the signatories, disapprove of the unilateral and ill-considered termination of the Contour Biennial and advocate for Contour to continue to exist as a biennial within a new constellation of actors.
