Via deze aankondiging willen de medewerkers van werkgroep ‘Israël en de Media’ u allen hartelijk bedanken voor uw betrokkenheid en handtekeningen van de afgelopen week. Zonder u was de petitie 'ABP STOP Israël Boycot!' niet mogelijk geweest en hadden wij geen krachtig signaal kunnen afgeven richting ABP pensioenfonds, andere bedrijven en de BDS-beweging in Nederland! Na reeds contact te hebben gehad met ABP, zullen wij volgende week alsnog de handtekeningen formeel overdragen bij het hoofdkantoor. Hiermee hopen wij u voldoende te hebben geïnformeerd.
Amsterdam, 7 februari 2014: Via de online petitie genaamd ‘ABP STOP Israël Boycot!’ hebben meer dan 2000 burgers uit alle lagen van de bevolking, in binnen- en buitenland getekend tegen een partijdige vorm van Boycot, Desinvestering en Sancties (BDS), die zich richt tegen de staat Israël omwille van 'de Palestijnse zaak’. De Nederlandse werkgroep ‘Israël en de Media’ en ondertekenaars moedigen de voortzetting van investeringen door ABP in Israëlische bedrijven aan. Met de actie willen zij bovendien een sterk signaal afgeven richting andere Nederlandse bedrijven te midden van de groeiende boycot- beweging in Nederland en Europa. ABP heeft de petitiemakers inmiddels laten weten geen gewijzigd beleid te zullen voeren ten aanzien van de investeringen in Israëlische bedrijven.
Recentelijk hebben het Nederlandse ingenieursbureau Royal HaskoningDHV, waterbedrijf Vitens en pensioenfonds PGGM reeds hun samenwerkingen beëindigd met Israëlische organisaties die hun diensten ook aan Israeli's op de Westelijke Jordaanoever aanbieden. Medewerkers in het Nederlandse onderwijs die zich scharen achter de Palestijnse BDS-beweging riepen ABP op om net als PGGM tot desinvestering van Israëlische banken over te gaan. Volgens werkgroep ‘Israël en de Media’ werkt de eenzijdige uitsluiting van Israël door BDS juist sterk polariserend en dus averechts; zowel in Nederland als in Israël. BDS vermeldt op haar website tegen normalisatie tussen Israëliërs en Palestijnen te zijn. Palestijnse woordvoerders van de beweging zeggen eveneens tegen vrede en een twee statenoplossing te zijn.
Doordat de BDS-beweging alle pijlen op Israël richt, worden andere partijen die actief betrokken zijn bij het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict bovendien gevrijwaard van enige verantwoordelijkheid, terwijl een oplossing alleen mogelijk is wanneer alle partijen bereid zijn tot een compromis, waarbij de belangen van beide onderhandelingspartners dienen te zijn gewaarborgd. Door tijdens de nu lopende vredesbesprekingen eenzijdige druk op Israel uit te oefenen loopt men op de uitkomsten vooruit; beide partijen moeten het immers eens worden over de precieze grenzen en andere heikele kwesties.
Donderdag 6 februari jl. heeft ABP persvoorlichter Jos van Dijk aan de petitiemakers laten weten dat het pensioenfonds na een eerdere evaluatie heeft geconcludeerd dat de Israëlische banken in kwestie (t.w. Hapoalim, Leumi Bank en Mizrahi Tefahot Bank) niet in strijd met internationale wetten of voorschriften handelen. ABP zal dan ook geen gewijzigd beleid ten aanzien van de investeringen in deze bedrijven voeren. In reactie op de maatschappelijke onrust en vragen wat dit betreft, heeft ABP dit woensdag ook al aangegeven in een verklaring.
Onlangs weigerde actrice Scarlett Johansson toe te geven aan de BDS beweging die haar opriep de samenwerking met het Israëlische SodaStream te beëindigen. Na kritiek van Oxfam International, dat diverse organisaties steunt die achter de BDS oproep staan, gaf ze haar ambassadeurschap voor Oxfam op. SodaStream levert huishoudelijke apparaten die kraanwater omzetten in koolzuurhoudend water en frisdranken. Het bedrijf heeft een fabriek in de Israëlische nederzetting Ma’ale Adumim, waar de zeker 500 Palestijnse werknemers aanzienlijk meer loon ontvangen dan in autonoom Palestijns gebied mogelijk is.

Without you, the petition ‘ABP STOP Israel Boycott!' would not have been possible, and we could not have send such a strong signal to ABP pension fund, other companies and the BDS-movement in the Netherlands! Now that we have been in contact with ABP, we will formally hand over the signatures at the ABP headquarters next week. We hope to have informed you sufficiently.
Amsterdam, 7 February 2014: More than 2000 people at home and abroad, have signed the online petition called ‘ABP STOP Israel Boycott!’ against a bias form of Boycott , Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) that is directed against the State of Israel in favor of ‘the Palestinian cause’. Dutch workgroup ‘Israel and the Media’ and the undersigned encourage the continuation of ABP-investments in Israeli companies. They furthermore aspire to send a strong signal to other Dutch companies amid the growing boycott movement in the Netherlands and Europe. By now, ABP has informed the petitioners that there will be no change in policy regarding the investments in Israeli companies.
Dutch engineering firm Royal HaskoningDHV, water company Vitens and pension fund PGGM recently ceased their cooperation with Israeli organizations that offer their services to Israelis in the West Bank. Employees in the Dutch education sector who affiliate with the Palestinian BDS-movement called upon ABP to follow PGGM’s decision of divestment from Israeli banks. According to workgroup ‘Israel and the Media’ the unilateral exclusion of Israel by BDS has strong polarizing effects and is therefore counterproductive, both in the Netherlands and in Israel. BDS declares on its website that it is opposed to normalization between Israelis and Palestinians. Palestinian representatives of the movement have furthermore spoken out against peace and a two-state solution.
As BDS is only critical at Israel, other parties who are actively involved in the conflict are exempted from any responsibility. A solution, however, is only possible if all parties are willing to compromise, whereby the interests of both negotiating partners must be guaranteed. It is counterproductive to exert international pressure on Israel during its current peace talks, as such pressure anticipates a certain outcome; indeed, both parties must jointly agree on critical issues such as where the exact borders will be established.
ABP Press Officer Jos van Dijk informed the creators of the petition on Thursday, February 6, that after a previous evaluation the pension fund had concluded that the conducts of the Israeli banks in question (i.e. Hapoalim, Leumi Bank and Mizrahi Tefahot Bank) are not in violation of international laws or regulations. ABP will therefore not change its policy regarding the investments in these Israeli organizations. In response to the social unrest and questions regarding this matter, ABP also made a public statement on it last Wednesday.
Recently, Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson refused to give in to the demands from BDS that called upon her to end further cooperation with the Israeli SodaStream company. After additional criticism from Oxfam International, an organization that supports various organizations behind the BDS call, Scarlett decided to resign from her role as an Oxfam ambassador. SodaStream is a manufacturer of home devices that convert tap water into sparkling water and soda. The company has a factory in the Israeli settlement of Ma'ale Adumim, where 500 Palestinian workers receive significantly higher wages than is possible in the autonomous Palestinian areas.
